Heart Healthy Snacks for National Heart Month

Healthy Snacks - Fruit

February is American Heart Month. It’s a great time to focus on your heart health and take a look at what you’re doing to stay healthy and prevent heart disease. Exercise is, of course, one of the best ways to help you keep your ticker ticking, but you may not realize just how much your diet can affect your heart. Here are a few snacks that you can bring into work that can help you snack healthy.

Apples

Apples are a great heart-healthy snack. The old adage that they’ll keep the doctor away may have more to it than you think too. Apples are packed with important vitamins and rich in antioxidants, flavonoids, and fiber. Antioxidants can help reduce your risk of heart disease.

Carrot Sticks

Like apples, carrot sticks are high in vitamins and antioxidants, which may help fight cardiovascular disease. Adding a healthy dressing can make them super tasty too. Try almond or peanut butter for a more satisfying snack.

Almonds and Walnuts

Nuts like almonds and walnuts contain unsaturated fats and fatty acids and may be linked to a healthier heart. Eating these types of nuts seems to be linked with lower levels of LDL cholesterol, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol. They may also help lower inflammation that plays a part in heart disease and may reduce your risk of stroke. Just be mindful that they’re high in calories, so don’t overdo it on the portions.

Berries

Berries like strawberries and blueberries are delicious, but they’re also full of phytonutrients, which are natural chemicals found in plants. These phytonutrients can help lower cholesterol levels, protecting you from heart disease.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is a good, heart-healthy alternative to other sweet treats for those moments when your sweet tooth needs to be satisfied. As long as you’re eating chocolate that is high in cocoa (about 70% is good) dark chocolate contains antioxidants and has been shown to lower blood pressure and increase blood flow. Just make sure you’re not overindulging.
